Best Times to Visit Suzhou

The best time to visit Suzhou is between October and November. Autumn ushers in comfortable temperatures and colorful foliage, which, by the way, look great against all those huge stones in the gardens. Autumn also lacks the crowds and rain showers of summer – the peak tourism season. Just skip the Chinese National Holiday from October 1st to October 7th, when it is impossible to avoid the crowds. Winter travelers can encounter chilly weather, making the exploration to gardens and water towns in Suzhou less enjoyable. The rising temperatures of spring offer a short sweet spot for travel, but avoid the Labor’s Day, which usually take place from May 1st to May 3rd.

Autumn (October-November)

Autumn sees the gradual decline of summer's heat and tourists. Daytime temps in the 60s(F) and 70s(F) or the 10s(C) and 20s(C), making this season a pleasant time to visit. Just bring a light jacket or sweater for the evenings. However, avoid visiting Suzhou during the Golden Week (from October 1st to October 7th) when the Chinese National Holiday attracts many Chinese tourists.

Winter (December-March)

While Suzhou doesn't get as cold as norther city like Beijing, it doesn't exactly offer guests a warm welcome. Temperatures usually hover in the mid-40s and low 50s during the day but can easily dip below freezing at night. Winter sees the least amount of rainfall. And you'll be able to take advantage of discounted flight and room rates before they inflate again in April. Avoid, however, the travel rush that take place 2 weeks before and after the Chinese Spring Festival, when tickets for flights and trains are hard to come by.

Spring (April-May)

Springtime in Suzhou draws many travelers because of comfortable temperatures – highs hover around the 70s(F) or 20s(C). Hotel rates will go up in a hurry during the Labor’s Day that take place around this time. Be sure to book train tickets and hotel several weeks in advance, as train tickets and accommodations can fill up quickly around this time of year.

Summer (June-September)

If you visit Suzhou during the summer, you'll have to brave not only the crowds – but worse – the heat. The months between July and August are the busiest and hottest of the year in Suzhou. High average temperatures in the 90s(F) or 30s(C) are coupled with frequent downpours. If you can, opt for another time of year.
