With an altitude of about 3300 meters (10,826 ft.), Shangri-La has a humid plateau climate. The four seasons are not markedly different, but there is a big temperature difference between day and night. On a sunny day, the temperature can reach up to 30°C (86°F), but when the sun is down it can feel like winter. So it is advisable to bring some warm clothing.
Spring is from March to May when the snow melts and the temperature ranges from 5°C to 20°C. As the summer (June-August) comes, the hottest season comes, with the highest temperature of about 15-30°C (59-86°F). Autumn is from September to October when the temperature is about 5-30°C (42-86°F) with large variations in temperature between day and night. Winter (November-February) sometimes records snowfall and regularly sees temperature go below freezing with a high range up to about 20°C (68°F). It's worth noting that due to the plateau climate, the weather of Shangri-La is always varied and unsettled. Even in August, the temperature may drop a lot. So no matter when to go, you should be prepared with some warm clothes.
The best time to visit Shangri-La is from March to August. During this period, the weather is favorable and the wildflowers are in bloom here and there. September or October is also a favorable month. This is fall harvest time and the entire plateau becomes a golden world.
