Located in the low-latitude monsoon climate zone, Kunming has a spring-like weather all year round, giving its name ‘Spring City’. The climate of the city is characterized by short, cool dry winters with mild days and crisp nights, and long, warm and humid summers, but much cooler than the lowlands. With warm and comfortable weather, Kunming is a perfect tourist destination throughout the year.
The average yearly temperature is about 15 °C (59 °F). The weather from November to the next February is changeable, with very big difference of temperature between day and night. Introduction to Kunming Climate
Situated at an elevation of 1,890 m on the Yungui Plateau with low latitude and high elevation, Kunming is reputed as the "City of Eternal Spring" with blossoms and lush vegetation all-year round.
The average highs are around 15 °C (59 °F) in winter and 24 °C (75 °F) in summer. The city has a mean annual rainfall of 1,010 millimetres (40 in), with an annual sunshine period of 2,250 hours and an annual frost-free period of 230 days. January is the coldest month with average temperature at 8 °C (about 46 °F), while July is the hottest month with average temperature at 19 °C (66 °F).
The rainy season lasts from May to October, when the weather is changeable, and temperature may drop suddenly. So it is recommended that take a raincoat plus a light overcoat with you. Because of the influence of rain and cloud, the weather even in the hottest July is sometimes less than 21 C (70 F).
The dry season is from November to April with about 20 sunny days in a month. At this period, prepare thick sweater and overcoat or down jacket for night; carry sunglass and apply sun block during the day. Take along water and fruits to avoid dehydration.
