Kunming Transportation - Getting There & Around

By Air

As the transportation hub of Yunnan Province, Kunming is served by all Chinese airlines and has daily flights to most cities. Besides Kunming Wujiaba International Airport, Kunming Changshui International Airport has been put into operation since June 28th, 2012. It is the fourth-largest airport in our country. Thus Kunming has a much more comprehensive transportation network. Currently, there are 17 airlines companies in the airport providing flights to most of China's major cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Xian, Guilin, Lhasa, Sanya. All major - and some obscure – tourist destinations within Yunan are served by daily flights from Kunming, such as Baoshan, Dali, Lijiang, Mangshi, Simao, Xishuangbanna, Zhaotong and Zhongdian. International routes include flights between Kunming and Bangkok, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Rangoon and Singapore. It is very convenient for travelers to get to Kunming by air.

By Train

As the capital of Yunnan province, Kunming servers as the province's railway hub and radiates railway lines in all directions. The Chengdu–Kunming Railway from Sichuan, Shanghai-Kunming Railway from Guizhou, and Nanning-Kunming Railway from Guangxi converge in Kunming from the north, northeast and east. Kunming is also linked to China's immediate neighbors Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam, by Yunnan-Vietnam Railway. The Kunming-Yuxi Railway runs south to Yuxi, where a second rail line to Vietnam is being planned and built. To the west of Kunming, the Guangtong-Dali Railway extends off the Chengdu-Kunming Line to Dali (Xiaguan Town).

Kunming has two railway stations

Kunming Railway Station is at the southern end of Beijing Xi Lu. This station services rail transportation to China’s major cities, such as Beijing, Guilin, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Xiamen and Zhengzhou. Passengers can also take daily trains to most cities within Yunnan province, including Shilin, Yuxi and Dali.

Kunming Railway Station is about four kilometers (about 2.5 miles) from the center of the city. Passengers can take public buses No. 2, 3, 23, 47, 68 and K1 to get there. Alternatively, it would take 15 minutes and cost about 10 yuan by Taxi to.

Kunming North Railway Station is about three kilometers (about 1.9 miles) north of the city center. It is on the heritage metre gauge Kunming–Hai Phong Railway, which runs to Hekou and Vietnam. It took about 16 hours to reach Hekou and 32 hours to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. This station provides convenience for the travelers who want to visit Hanoi (two departures every week on Friday and Sunday).

Important notice: If you are planning a trip to Vietnam, be sure to obtain your Vietnam visa in Guangzhou, Beijing, or other major city in advance. It is impossible to get your Vietnam Visa in Kunming.

Railway tickets can be booked in most hotels in the city; or you can book tickets 7 days prior to your departure at a railway station ticket office, 8:00 to 17:30.

Yunnan’s major tourist cities are connected by railways. If you have enough time, you can take a relax train journey, enjoying natural beauty and local buildings along the way.

By Long-distance Bus

Kunming has a comprehensive highway system. You can take long-distance buses to cities within Yunnan province such as Dali and Lijiang, and outside Yunnan Province, as well as to neighboring countries. You can also choose long-distance buses to reach the city from Beijing (National Highway 108), Lanzhou (213), Shanghai (320), Fuzhou (324) or other cities. There are five major long-distance bus stations in Kunming.

West Bus Station

The West (Xi Bu) Bus Station, originally known as the Xi Shan Bus Station, has been put into operation since 2008. Presently, it services 44 lines about 954 long-distance buses, taking passengers from Kunming to Dali, Lijiang, Diqing (Shangri-La), Chuxiong, Baoshan, Dehong, Lincang, Puer and Nujiang.

South Bus Station

Built in 2009, South (Nan) Bus Station mainly operates buses running on Kunming-Yuxi (Gaocang) Expressway. It provides convenience for travelers for it has bus routes to most of the regional destinations, including Puer, Xishuangbanna, Yuxi, Honghe Prefecture (Jianshui, Shiping, Yuanyang, Lvchun, Honghe). There are three types of buses for you to choose: Regular and Faster, Luxurious.

North Bus Station

The North (Bei) Bus Station operates long-distance buses running to the northeast of Yunnan Province along the Kunming-Qujing Way and National Highway No.213. There are scheduled buses to and from Qujing, Zhaotong, Xundian, Songming, Luquan and Dongchuan.

East Bus Station

The East (Dong Bu) Bus Station were built to service buses to and from the east and southeast of Yunnan Province along Kunming-Shilin Expressway. This station provides buses to Shilin County, Yiliang County, Wenshan Prefecture, Luliang County, Shizong County and Luoping County.

Northwest Bus Station

The Northwest (Xi Bei Bu) Bus Station mainly operates the buses to the northwest of Yunnan Province. Passengers can take buses to Dingwu, Yuanmou, Yongren, Huaping, Fuming, Luquan along National Highway No.108; and reach Anning, Yimen and Chuxiong along National Highway No.320.
