Best Time to Visit Kunming

The best time to visit Kunming are March through June and between September and October, when the temperatures are warm, and a variety of festivals take place. The weather from July to August is ideal for exploring the Stone Forest Park, though crowds are typically at their largest. Nighttime temperatures between November and February can drop into the 40s Fahrenheit (10s Celsius), but hotel and airfare deals are easy to find.

Spring (March to May)

In the spring, flowers are fully bloomed, and you'll encounter superb weather – average daytime temperatures hover between 20°C to 25°C (70°F to 75°F) – comfortable conditions for walking around. You won't encounter as many rain showers during this season as you will in the summer, but you'll still want to pack an umbrella as a precaution.

Summer (June to August)

The average summer temperatures will be perfectly around 24°C (75°F). But its crowds swell during the summer months. Families flock to Kunming and other cities like Lijiang and Dali in Yunnan once school is out, so plan on locking down your hotel and flight reservations at least three or four weeks in advance. You'll also experience the most rain and humidity at this time, so pack an umbrella.

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is one of the best times to visit Kunming. Between the autumn months of September and November, temperatures range from 17°C to 23°C (63°F to 73°F). Cooler weather means you'll enjoy pleasant conditions while exploring the city's top attractions. However, the Chinese National Holiday will take place the first week of October, meaning you could encounter an unbearable crowd. To avoid penalties for holiday-related crowds or more driving hours, consider avoiding the holiday.

Winter (December to February)

The city's placement in the warmer climate of southern China makes its winter milder. The temperatures hover from 2°C to 17°C (36°F to 63°F), so you are unlikely to see snow in Kunming. Visit the city in Winter, you'll find few people and many hotel and flight deals. Annual rainfall is at its lowest around this time, so you likely won't need an umbrella.
