World Horticultural Expo Garden
World Horti-Expo Garden is situated in the northeast suburbs of Kunming next to the Golden Temple scenic spot that is just 6 kilometers from the city center. Once as the venue for the 1999 Kunming International Horticulture Exposition, with the theme of "Man and Nature-Marching Toward the 21st Century", the World Horticultural Expo Garden serves as a permanent gardening center in Kunming City.
In this garden, you will find many gardening and horticultural works of many domestic and foreign places. Concentrating on the theme of "Man and Nature", all the horticultural works are decorated with pavilions, towers, terraces, banks, islets and bridges. It not only provides you with a large collection of the world's greatest natural treasures, but also helps to foster a social awareness of the harmonious existence between man and nature.
Kunming World Horticultural Expo Garden covers an area of 218 hectares (nearly 540 acres), dividing into 5 big exhibition halls, 7 theme gardens, 3 outdoor showplaces and 2 big squares. The 5 exhibition halls are China Hall, the International Hall, the Man and Nature Hall, the Green House, and the Science and Technology Hall). The 7 theme gardens include the Tree Garden, the Tea Garden, the Bonsai Garden, the Medicinal Herb Garden, the Bamboo Garden, the Vegetable and Fruit Garden and the Garden of Famous Flowers and Strange Stones (It was found after the 1999 Kunming International Horticulture Exposition). The 3 outdoor showplaces are the International Outdoor Exhibition Area, the Domestic Outdoor Exhibition Area, and the Exhibition Area for Enterprises). And the 2 big squares are Century Plaza, and the Performance Plaza.
After you get into the garden, the Grand Greenhouse will come into your sight. It covers area of 3,630 square meters (about 0.9 acre) and has 4 exhibition areas: the Tropical Plant Exhibition Area, the Temperate Plants Exhibition Area, Plants at High and Cold Elevations Areas (3,000 meters or more above the sea level), Exhibition Centre and Photos Exhibition Area.
Afterwards, you will be attracted by the Domestic Exhibition Gardens, where you can find 34 sections according to China's provinces and regions. Every section has its own characteristics coordinating with the local culture, religion, and infrastructure of the province. Besides, you will be fascinated by two green belts running from south to north symbolizing the Yangtze River and the Yellow River (Huang He).
Going forward, you will come to the International Exhibition Gardens, which include 33 sections in total. The five big exhibition halls and the seven special gardens are scattered here.
With 2,551 kinds of plants and more than 2 million in total, the Kunming World Horticultural Expo Garden is regarded as an international botanical garden incorporating educational and recreational activities. You can spend at least a half a day in this lovely world class garden by wandering around to enjoy the exquisite horticulture, and feel that human beings are interrelated with Nature in a harmonious way.
